The main aim of a doctor has always been the care of his patients.
Finding the cause of disease, and tackling it, where possible, through prevention or treatment, to
the point where it is eliminated and the patient is cured - this is what we call clinical research.

The Gimema Group, how it begun.




The GIMEMA (Italian Group for Haematological Diseases in Adults) began in 1982, with a small group of Italian haematology centres, which realised that only by joining forces and comparing case studies could they achieve results of any significance, which they would not otherwise have been able to do.

It was the start of a journey, one which has brought about unexpected successes. Over the years it has also given rise to the establishment of a network to which almost all Italian haematology centres, and all the various diseases they deal with, belong. Membership requires only two strict undertakings: the rigorous observation of clinical research protocols and the proper collation of results.

Clinical Trials.




What is a clinical trial? It is the kind of research that allows us objectively to identify the effectiveness of new drugs or new treatment therapies directly on man. It is the last step in a long series of studies that have turned a molecule, or active ingredient, into a plausible candidate in defining new standards of cure. This validation process is, broadly speaking, independent from a specific pathology and follows very strict regulations.
Every day, in the pharmaceutical industries, are analysed thousands of molecules, in very different physiopathological conditions, in way as to be able to isolate the most interesting candidates for a given pathology.

The Data Centre.




Planning and coordinating clinical trials requires an extremely professional, highly computerized and multidisciplinary operational structure. Doctors, biologists, project managers, computer experts, data managers, statisticians and lawyers must collaborate at the highest levels in an ancient discipline that is finding new ways of working in order to remain efficient and competitive in the search for a better cure, or at least a cure, for those who are ill.

The constant growth of GIMEMA has meant a change of headquarters to allow the Data Centre, the nerve centre of the Foundation, to carry out its activities with continued operational efficiency.
